The Ombudsman is an Officer of Parliament, appointed to investigate, review and inspect the administrative conduct of state sector agencies and provide advice and guidance to ensure people are treated fairly in New Zealand. The work is varied, interesting, and professionally challenging.

We have vacancies for the position of Assistant Investigator. This position is in the Early Assistance Team and is one of a team of people taking telephone enquiries and complaints from the public and from prisoners.

The position also involves dealing with written enquiries and complaints, and preparing written responses to them. Where appropriate, the appointees will initiate communication with the relevant public sector agency or prison to assist with resolving the complaint.

The ideal candidates will preferably have the following skills, experience and attributes: 

  • a legal or other tertiary qualification;
  • some knowledge of central/local government practices;
  • a strong work ethic and high level of integrity;
  • excellent verbal communication and ability to prepare appropriate written responses;
  • organisation and time management skills;
  • analytical and problem solving skills;
  • an ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused when dealing with aggrieved parties; and
  • an ability to apply utmost discretion in dealing with sensitive information.

The successful appointees may be required to achieve and maintain a NZ government (NZSIS) security clearance and must have legal entitlement to work in New Zealand.

The salary for this position will range between $53,203 and $66,502 depending on skills and experience.
