Here at the Ombudsman, we are about fairness for all. We handle complaints against government agencies and undertake investigations and inspections. Good administration is encouraged by providing feedback and training to agencies. The Chief Ombudsman also initiates his own investigations where he sees the need.
A key part of our vision is to break down barriers that prevent disabled people from participating equally in society. The Disability Rights Team supports the Chief Ombudsman as part of New Zealand's Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The team focus on significant issues and systemic concerns that raise disability rights issues. They aim to raise awareness of disability rights and contribute to effective change and overall improvements in standards of administrative conduct by public sector agencies.
Reporting to the Manager Disability Rights, the Senior Advisor supports the Chief Ombudsman, Deputy Ombudsman and Assistant Ombudsmen by providing strategic advice, planning and assistance on disability issues, and in particular to support the role of the Ombudsman as part of the IMM under the Disability Convention. The Senior Advisor will assist across a range of different activities including building capability internally and externally by providing specialist advice and guidance to wide range of stakeholders both within New Zealand and internationally.
What you will bring
- A relevant tertiary qualification;
- Sound knowledge and understanding of the disability environment, both in NZ and internationally;
- An understanding of current New Zealand public sector practice, the context in which public sector agencies operate, and the challenges they face;
- Experience in an investigative, arbitration and/or mediation environment, preferably with a disability focus;
- Experience at a senior level in providing advice and training, and drafting submissions and commentary in an effective way to influence change.
- A proven ability to recognise and understand key Māori, disability and other cultural and human rights concepts, including the Treaty of Waitangi and equal employment opportunities; and
- Expertise in managing internal and external relationships with a variety of stakeholders in a challenging environment.

Depending on skills and experience, the salary is expected to be $94,000 to $124,000.
